Estimating scanning characteristics from corners in bilevel images

چکیده

Degradations that occur during scanning can cause errors in Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Scans made in bilevel mode (no grey scale) from high contrast source patterns are the input to the estimation processes. 1\vo scanner system parameters are estimated from bilevel scans using models of the scanning process and bilevel source patterns. The scanner's point spread function (PSF) width and the binarization threshold are estimated by using comer features in the scanned images. These estimation algorithms were tested in simulation and with scanned test patterns. The resulting estimates are close in value to what is expected based on grey-level analysis. The results of estimation are used to produce synthetically scanned characters that in most cases bear a strong resemblance to the characters scanned on the scanner at the same settings as the test pattern used for estimation.

Scanner Parameter Estimation Using Bilevel Scans of Star Charts

Scanning a high contrast image in bilevel mode results in image degradation. This is caused by two primary effects: blurring and thresholding. This paper expands on a method of estimating a joint distortion parameter, called the edge spread, from a star sector test chart in order to calculate the values of the point spread function width and binarization threshold. This theory is also described...

Unimodal thresholding

Most thresholding algorithms have difficulties processing images with unimodal distributions. In this paper an algorithm, based on finding a corner in the histogram plot, is proposed that is capable of performing bilevel thresholding of such images. Its effectiveness is demonstrated on synthetic data as well as a variety of real data, showing its successful application to edges, corners, differ...

RENOIR - A dataset for real low-light image noise reduction

Many modern and popular state of the art image denoising algorithms are trained and evaluated using images corrupted by artificial noise. These trained algorithms and their evaluations on synthetic data may lead to incorrect conclusions about their performances on real noise. In this paper we introduce a benchmark dataset of uncompressed color images corrupted by natural noise due to low-light ...

Estimating Degradation Model Parameters from Character Images

This paper discusses the use of character images to determine the parameters of an image degradation model. The acute angles in character images provide information used to find the model parameters. Three experiments are conducted to evaluate the use of characters. In the first experiment, large quantities of corners from character images are used to investigate how their contribution affects ...

Progressive coding of error-diffused bilevel images

We propose a new method to compress error-diffused bilevel images with resolution scalability. This method is a combination of inverse halftoning and rehalftoning. For the inverse halftoning, we combine 232 dots into a single pixel of a resolution-reduced image, where each pixel has a multilevel value of 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4. After the inverse halftoning, the resolution-reduced multilevel image is...
